When to talk to your vet before buying gear
Mobility aids help, but many "old age" changes are actually treatable pain. The AAHA Senior Care Guidelines note that owners often see changes as normal aging when they may be chronic pain.
Call promptly if you see
- Sudden inability to stand or walk, or dragging or knuckling of the paws
- Crying out, or reluctance to be touched
- New loss of bladder or bowel control
- Weakness after a fall or jump
Bring to the appointment
- Short phone videos of your dog getting up, walking, and on stairs. AAHA specifically recommends videos.
- A list of what's changed and when
- Questions about pain management, physical rehabilitation, and weight management
- Which aids (harness, ramp, wheelchair) suit your dog's diagnosis
