🐾 Slipping on hard floors

"My 13 year old baby girl finds that one spot of hardwood floor to lay on then gets stuck because her back legs wont work." (real owner post)

What to try, in order

  1. Cover the routes your dog actually uses (bed to water to door) with non-slip runners or interlocking yoga mats. AAHA and VCA both list this first.
  2. Keep nails short and trim the fur between the pads. VCA compares long nails to "high heels on an ice rink."
  3. If rugs aren't enough, try a grip aid: nail grips (ToeGrips), grippy socks, or boots. Each suits different dogs, so trial one and stop if your dog fights it.
  4. If your dog can't get up once down, the problem is weakness rather than grip. Go to "Can't stand up".
Talk to your vet: Sudden slipping, knuckling (walking on the tops of the paws), or dragging feet can be neurological. Get it checked rather than just adding grip.
